Celebrating achievements of our in-house legal team [2024]

What a year it was! Here at Bonamark we filed 1000+ trademarks, completed thousands of IP services, searched for – literally – tens of thousands marks and prepared around a hundred of IP assignment agreements.

I hope that you already know how Bonamark works – we partner with around 200 attorneys in 180 different countries and territories to create a single place for your trademark registration. We prepare all the docs, handle all the communication and control the quality of services provided.

Despite not being a law company per se, Bonamark has had a legal department since 2017. Initially, it was very small, with just a few paralegals focused on preparing documents and applications in the UK and Singapore. Over the years, the experience and expertise of our team grew, and we started taking on more difficult cases. Why? We were not happy with the pricing charged by some attorneys for very basic services.

We wanted to deliver more for less – that’s our driving force.

We started responding to objections in the UK, Australia and Singapore: change description, correct mistakes for WIPO applications, explain why the mark is distinctive, etc.

We still relied on external attorneys for trademark disputes.

Then, we tried to take a simple case somewhere in 2021. It was not as difficult as we thought it would be. With each won case we became more and more confident. For our clients, it was a lifesaver: they didn’t have the luxury of choosing between an attorney charging 300$/hour or 400$/hour. For them, it was the choice between being unrepresented and losing a case and getting an experienced team on the case.

Obviously, it was not possible in all the jurisdictions. There are local laws that we follow.

So what was special about 2024? Not in the number of oppositions or cancellations we defended our clients from. It was the names and fame of our opponents that made it so special. In 2024 alone, our legal team faced Sony, Armani and RedBull represented by top law firms.

Our legal team secured victories in those cases and made these companies back off.

What are our plans for 2025? Our main focus remains unchanged: make trademark protection accessible for small and medium businesses. In this economy, many businesses are already struggling, which makes them an easy prey for multi-billion bullies. Defending your brands doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

With that in mind, we started this year.
