The Mexican Intellectual Property Office (IMPI), officially known as the Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial, is the government agency responsible for all trademark and patent registrations in Mexico.

Trademark protection in Mexico is governed by the Industrial Property Law, effective since August 2019 and in force in 2025. It introduced simplified filing, digital processing, coexistence agreements, and the Nice Classification for goods and services. Mexico follows the first-to-file system.
Foreign applicants (including U.S. citizens) can file a trademark application in Mexico through Bonamark’s local attorney. Applications are submitted in Spanish with authorized representation. If you already have protection in other countries, you may extend your rights to Mexico via the Madrid Protocol or file directly with IMPI.
